Why Our Classes Are So Popular

Confidence & Self-esteem

Confidence & self-esteem grows when children learn and play with others. Parents say that performing in class concerts every few weeks has often been a game changer for their children

Faster Progress

Groups create a momentum that is continually moving forward, carrying all members of the group forward together. It's therefore not surprising that our class students typically progress faster together. This group momentum also provides a natural motivation to practice

We learn better in a group

Research demonstrates that we learn as much from others as we do from a teacher, and we learn best when we feel relaxed and are having fun!

Other advantages of our small group classes

  • Ensemble Playing - the ability to play in time with others is an important skill that musicians can struggle with, especially if when taught traditionally

  • Playing Games - that accelerate and deepen learning is more fun with friends.

  • Singing - is the key to developing musical skills. Students find singing easier, less uncomfortable, more collaborative and fun with others.

About Thurrock

Thurrock is a borough and unitary authority area in south Essex, located on the north bank of the River Thames immediately east of London and has over 18 miles (29 km) of riverfront including the Port of Tilbury, the principal port for London.

Grays is the main town where the local council is based but the area includes Stanford-le-Hope, Tilbury, Purfleet-on-Thames, and South Ockendon, alongside rural villages like Bulphan and Orsett.

Despite its industrial roots along the river, about 70% of the borough is protected Green Belt with Nature Reserves which include Rainham Marshes and Thameside Nature Park. Landmarks include the Historic military sites: Tilbury Fort and Coalhouse Fort, which overlook the Thames estuary.

Mammoths once grazed in the Thurrock area and archaeologists unearthed the remains of a jungle cat. Humans have lived in the area since prehistoric times and the land has been farmed by the Romans and Anglo-Saxons. Thurrock has numerous archaeological sites including the major excavation at Mucking. The name "Thurrock" is a Saxon name meaning "the bottom of a ship".

Our music lessons serve the surrounding neighbourhoods, including East Tilbury, Chadwell St Mary, Tilbury and Grays Thurrock, ensuring that residents from nearby areas can easily access our services. With a focus on music education, The Music Initiative aims to enrich the cultural fabric of the community, celebrating local talent and creativity through performances and collaborations.
